Job description: Full Time Domestic Goddess

Who am I? Well the story starts when I was at a party earlier this year and someone I was talking to asked me what I did for a living. My reply was that I’m a stay at home mum. The look on his face was of total shock and he replied very questionably, you’re a stay at home mum? It got me thinking, why it was a shock that I am a stay at home mum? Since this encounter occurred I have given quite some thought as to why this was such a surprise. Also, strangely enough I have been questioned on a few other occasions since then and found the same look of complete astonishment came across the ir faces as well.

This got me thinking even further. I am a full time stay at home mum. We have a beautiful 9-month-old little girl, who I could say is easily more than a full time job. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, every moment of her life’s existence has been my job. But I am also more than this; I am also a lover, friend, daughter, granddaughter, sister and Full Time Domestic Goddess. Yes Full Time Domestic Goddess.

I know I’ve actually earned and deserved to be referred to a s such. But how does this relate to m y life and how I live?

It all started in the beginning of 2009. Upon the shock news of falling pregnant, telling my pa rtner the news and trying to comprehend what was ahead, I knew this was going to be a huge challenge. I am probably the most un-baby like person anyone would know. I’d never even held a newborn baby, changed a nappy or given babies a single thought. I was on the career path and I had a plan, one that didn’t involve babies, or men for that matter, but that’s a whole other chapter! I wanted to excel at being me.

I had chosen a new career path (being a mum) and now it was time for me to make it into something I loved, was proud of and could take grace and grandeur in announcing to others should such an occasion arise. Mind you, it would be something of a private challenge to begin with as no one but me would know at times I would fall short with some of the untold issues of new families, lack of sleep, a screaming baby and a new life that really smacks you in the face with reality when it can hurt the most. But the fact that I was focusing on and making a conscious effort to put quality into a very new, strange and unfamiliar chapter had given me some kind of ethical meaning to who I can be. Instead of stumbling through my day, I am determined to approach everything to this new chapter in a more professional manner. I have a job to do and I intend to be successful at it.

I do realise however, that theory is easier than practical application when it comes to smiling and being completely unmoved when everything that can go wrong, does in fact go wrong, and happens all at once (just like life felt the need to plant a whopping big slap across my face, as though I had fallen asleep on the job). However, no one but me could ever have the same amount of commitment and dedication to my new family, and the people in my life, especially my new family could only benefit from my renewed sense of direction and self worth.

My new role calls for me to be aware of the awesome responsibility I have to those I love and whose lives I touch on a daily basis. Being prepared, organized and informed will keep me on track mentally, physically and spiritually. Which in turn helps with the stress and daily grind life can be at times. It is vital to be able to draw upon your own strength, wisdom and intuition to keep working toward the ultimate goal of knowing you can juggle it all.

So who is a Full Time Domestic Goddess? A Domestic Goddess is a woman who loves food, takes pride in her housework, does the best she can do for her family and of course looks after herself and feels her best. It’s not about what she has but how she does it. It’s about her attitude and acceptance. Her happiness, contentment and the warmth she radiates are the most enviable qualities of her beauty. It’s the passion with which she applies herself to her relationships and everything she does that make it all come together.

I now try to wake everyday with the feeling of having a new day to accomplish so much more than previous days. Time to organise, tackle and complete whatever is thrown at me. Time to spend with our gorgeous little button and indulge in my relationship with my partner and so many other people in my life. Setting this challenge to be the best I can be with what I have isn't always easy, takes a lot of practice, but this is where I want to be, where my life is and its my choice to take things wherever I want to go.

Join me on my journey of life's greatest challenges — Motherhood, Lover, Woman and Domestic Goddess. Its sure to be a bumpy, fun and interesting ride!
